Prior Authorization Reform – Still Time to Join The Effort

As OSMA leadership and staff travel the state meeting with members, frustration with prior authorization is always at or near the top of everyone’s list for what the OSMA needs to address.

We did pass major prior authorization reform in 2016 that was implemented in 2017 and 2018. These reforms covered commercial and Medicaid plans in Ohio. Many practices believe there might be elements of the law that some insurance plans aren’t in full compliance or that the intent of some of the provisions isn’t being followed.

In order to focus our advocacy efforts in 2020 on continuing prior authorization reform, we need your help in completing a comprehensive survey on general issues as well as analyzing specific elements of compliance with the 2016 law. Thank you to those practices that have already completed the survey. If you haven’t done so already, we are asking every practice in Ohio to complete the 15-minute survey.

We are leaving the survey open until December 16. Please forward it to the staff person in your office responsible for prior authorization.

While lengthy, the level of detail we are collecting will be essential for our reform efforts in the future. We will report back our findings to everyone in late January.
